Nevada is expected to hire Steve Alford as its next head coach barring a late breakdown in negotiations, sources told Stadium's Jeff Goodman.

The school has informed other coaches up for the job that it's negotiating a contract with another candidate, multiple sources told CBS Sports' Jon Rothstein.

UCLA fired Alford in December after a 7-6 start. The 54-year-old posted a 124-63 record, guiding his team to three Sweet 16 appearances during his six-year run with the Bruins.

Alford is no stranger to the Mountain West Conference after coaching New Mexico for six seasons prior to his stint at UCLA.

Nevada finished 29-5 last year while capturing a share of the regular-season Mountain West Conference title. The Wolf Pack fell to San Diego State in the semifinals of the conference tournament before losing to Florida in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.

Alford is set to replace Eric Musselman, who was hired by Arkansas on Sunday.
