Georgia Tech charged with 'severe' NCAA rule violations
Georgia Tech confirmed its men's basketball program has been served notice of three alleged violations of NCAA rules, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution's Ken Sugiura.
In 2016, then-assistant coach Darryl LaBarrie allegedly took a high school recruit and a then-current Georgia Tech player to a strip club, where a Yellow Jackets booster supplied the players with $300 in cash.
The booster and prospect in question - whose identities are redacted in the NCAA report - are former Georgia Tech standout and 13-year NBA veteran Jarrett Jack and current Chicago Bulls rookie Wendell Carter Jr., sources told ESPN's Mark Schlabach.
Carter ultimately committed to Duke, playing one season before turning pro.
The NCAA also alleges that LaBarrie attempted to obfuscate its investigation into the matter, according to Sugiura, both by providing misleading statements and encouraging the second unnamed player to do the same.
Ron Bell, a former associate of current head coach Josh Pastner, is also reportedly being charged with rules violations. Bell allegedly gave clothing, meals, and plane tickets to former Georgia Tech players Josh Okogie (now with the Minnesota Timberwolves) and Tadric Jackson, and also attempted to convince Memphis' Markel Crawford to transfer.
According to the NCAA notice acquired by Sugiura, these actions constitute "a severe breach of conduct (Level I violation)." Georgia Tech has until May 16 to respond to the NCAA.
Pastner himself has not been charged with violating any NCAA rules, according to his attorney.
