LSU's Waters: 'I kind of blacked out' during winning shot vs. Maryland

Tremont Waters created his own "one shining moment" Saturday, but he might not be able to fully recall it.

The LSU sophomore guard's bucket with 1.6 seconds remaining moved the Tigers past Maryland into the Sweet 16, and amid the celebration afterward, he said he just put his head down and went careening into Maryland's 3-2 zone.

"This might sound funny, but I kind of blacked out," Waters told SI's Andy Staples. "I didn't hear anything. I just knew I had to get to the rim."

Waters attacked off a high screen, curled around Terps forward Jalen Smith - inviting the question whether he traveled - and scooped the ball off glass into the basket.

Maryland head coach Mark Turgeon said his team couldn't make the stop after employing the zone most of the second half.

"The players knew exactly what was coming," he said. "We all knew what was coming. It was whether we were going to be able to stop it or not."

Waters dedicated the win to teammate Wayde Sims, who died in December after he was shot.

"He's always with us," Waters told Jamie Erdahl of CBS. "Our score was 44 at one point, and we all stopped in the huddle and looked up at the scoreboard ... and we just knew we had to get this win for him."

LSU now moves on to the East Regionals to play the winner of Michigan State and Minnesota, though it does so without suspended head coach Will Wade. Tony Benford will oversee the team in the interim.
