UNC to name court after Roy Williams
Roy Williams' name will now live forever in Chapel Hill.
The playing surface at the Dean E. Smith Center will officially be named "Roy Williams Court" at a basketball reunion event on Aug. 24, the school announced.
Williams will join Duke's Mike Krzyzewski and Syracuse's Jim Boeheim as the only active head coaches who have their home court named after them.
"It's very hard to believe; it's just so flattering," Williams said. "I have to figure out a way to thank all my current and former players, because it may be my name on the court, but it really honors all of them because they made the plays."
A UNC graduate and assistant under the legendary Smith, Williams has led the Tar Heels to a 424-126 record during his tenure as head coach, and captured NCAA championships in 2005, 2009, and 2017.
