University of Houston head coach Kelvin Sampson has reportedly emerged as the top target for the Orlando Magic's vacant head coaching vacancy, according to The New York Times' Marc Stein.

Sampson helped guide Houston (27-8) to its first victory in the NCAA tournament in over three decades when his Cougars knocked off San Diego State in Round 1. They were subsequently eliminated by Michigan in the Round of 32.

If the Magic decide to choose Sampson, it would be his first head coaching gig in the NBA after 25 seasons as a bench boss on the collegiate level.

Sampson did spend six seasons as an assistant in the pros, splitting time with the Milwaukee Bucks and Houston Rockets from 2008 to 2014.
