Kansas named in new NCAA charges
Federal prosecutors Tuesday announced additional charges levied against two Adidas employees and another man in relation to an ongoing FBI investigation into NCAA basketball. James Gatto, Merl Code, and former NBA player agent Christian Dawkins were charged with defrauding four NCAA schools, including the University of Kansas, which had previously not been named in the scandal.
According to the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, the men were involved in payments to the families of six basketball players who later attended Kansas, N.C. State, Miami, and Louisville. Those recruits include current NBA players Josh Jackson and Dennis Smith Jr., sources told Yahoo's Dan Wetzel.
All the schools were sponsored by Adidas. Louisville's involvement in the scandal has already brought down longtime coach Rick Pitino and athletic director Tom Jurich.
N.C. State announced that the U.S. Attorney's office had subpoenaed the school last month in regard to communication records between school officials and ex-Wolfpack guard Smith, who now plays for the Dallas Mavericks.
Lawyers for Gatto, Code, and Dawkins have maintained that while their clients broke NCAA regulations, they did nothing illegal.
