On Friday, Virginia became the first No. 1 seed in NCAA tournament history to lose to a No. 16 seed, and it has a pair of its own former graduates to thank.

Dave Lyles and Carol Motley - both Virginia alums, according to Dan Wolken of USA TODAY Sports - are the parents of Jarius Lyles, the UMBC senior who dropped 28 points in the Retrievers' unfathomable 74-54 upset over the top-ranked Cavaliers.

Lyles led UMBC in scoring during the season with 20.2 points per game. The 6-foot-2 guard had both of his parents in attendance Friday to watch him and the Retrievers cement their spot in NCAA lore.

Lyles battled cramps in the second half, but finished the contest 9-of-11 from the field, including 3-of-4 from downtown.
