Oklahoma president David Boren, one of the most vocal and influential figures in the Big 12, announced Wednesday he plans to retire on June 30, 2018, the end of the ongoing academic year.

Boren's departure will be contingent on the university finding a suitable replacement.

Last summer, Boren's frustration with the Big 12 became a frequent point of discourse, as he often questioned its long-term vision while advocating for expansion, the implementation of a football championship game, and a media network for the conference.

He also appeared to hint that Oklahoma could leave the Big 12 during the next round of realignment.

Boren, 76, has served as Oklahoma's president since November 1994.
