University of Virginia men's basketball head coach Tony Bennett hopes his team can help bring "hope and healing" to Charlottesville in the wake of the violent, racially charged protests that took place in the area Monday.

"On behalf of my coaching staff and the Virginia basketball team, we believe in diversity and unity to its fullest extent," Bennett said in a video shared by the Virginia basketball program. "We know that when those two things come together, something beautiful and triumphant comes out of it."

Virginia football coach Bronco Mendenhall delivered a similar message Tuesday, saying his players "stand united, embracing the differences and respecting the difference and valuing the differences."
