Luke Walton: Lakers will inquire about LaVar Ball's involvement at UCLA

The Los Angeles Lakers won't use the No. 2 overall pick on top prospect Lonzo Ball without first doing their due diligence on his father.

Given LaVar Ball's outspoken nature, Lakers bench boss Luke Walton said the franchise plans to speak with UCLA head coach Steve Alford in the foreseeable future to inquire about LaVar's involvement during Lonzo's freshman year.

"I wouldn’t personally, but yes, somebody in our organization will, absolutely," Walton said on "The Dan Patrick Show."

While there's a reasonable possibility LaVar will serve as a distraction if his son is chosen by the Lakers, Walton said he isn't concerned - at least for the time being.

"Not yet," Walton said. "When we get closer to the draft, we’ll get a packet of information on every player that we’re really interested in, and then we’ll sit down and discuss it all. But right now I’m not concerned at all; I’m mostly concerned with what player can help us win more than 26 games the most."

While many have linked Lonzo to the Lakers even before Tuesday's draft lottery, a report surfaced Friday indicating that Los Angeles could instead use its first-round selection on Kentucky point guard De'Aaron Fox .
