Cavs cut Daye, 3 others

The Cleveland Cavaliers made four cuts on Friday, ahead of Monday's deadline to trim the regular-season roster to 15.

Austin Daye, D.J. Stephens, Dionte Christmas, and Jack Cooley have all been waived, bringing the Cavs' roster to 16 with one cut remaining. That final cut will likely be Quinn Cook, depending on the team's confidence in the health of point guard Kyrie Irving, as it's believed that Jared Cunningham has made the team on a non-guaranteed contract.

The waived players could be tabbed for duty as D-League affiliate players in Canton, where they would sacrifice overseas paydays for proximity to the NBA.

The most notable cut of the four is Daye, who has appeared in 293 NBA games over the last six seasons with five different teams, averaging 5.2 points and 2.6 rebounds. A combo-forward with a capable outside stroke, Daye appeared in six preseason games for the Cavs, averaging five points in 11.9 minutes.

Stephens played far less, averaging 3.2 points in 7.3 minutes over four exhibition outings. The Memphis product appeared in three games with the Milwaukee Bucks in 2013-14 but has primarily spent his professional career overseas.

Christmas saw more time than the others, averaging 19.9 minutes in four games and putting up 6.8 points and 2.5 rebounds. The 29-year-old had a cup of coffee with the Phoenix Suns in 2013-14 and, like Stephens, has opted for international play over a D-League stint.

The Cavs just signed Cooley on Saturday after he was waived by the Utah Jazz, likely with the intention of having him in the D-League. He didn't appear in a preseason game for Cleveland but has 16 games of NBA experience with the Jazz under his belt.
