Spurs sign Julian Washburn

Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

The San Antonio Spurs have signed forward Julian Washburn, the team announced Thursday.

Washburn's signing comes one day after the Spurs trimmed their roster from 20 to 16, however it seems unlikely he'll be competing for the Spurs' final roster spot. San Antonio appears to be deciding between Reggie Williams and Rasual Butler for their 15th spot, and it looks as though they're simply using their short window of roster space to add a D-League affiliate player.

That means Washburn will likely be waived ahead of Monday's final cut deadline, and, should he be willing to forgo overseas opportunities, would land with the Spurs' D-Leaguaffiliate in Austin.

Undrafted as a senior out of UTEP this summer, the 6-foot-8 Washburn registered impressive measurements at the Portsmouth invitational, posting a 6-foot-11.5 wingspan, and 8-foot-8 standing reach. Washburn is a three-time Conference USA All-Defensive team member, and the reigning C-USA Defensive Player of the Year.

As a senior, Washburn averaged 10.3 points on 41.5 percent from the floor, but added 4.1 rebounds, 2.6 assists, and a 38.1-percent mark from long range. He appeared in two summer league games with the Golden State Warriors, scoring two points in 14 total minutes.
