VIDEO: Dion Waiters' unconventional free-throw shooting adjustment

The idiom "you can't teach an old dog new tricks" does not apply to Dion Waiters.

He's only 23 years old, after all.

So, after shooting 68 percent from the free-throw line last season - a career-low for the three-year man - the Oklahoma City Thunder shooting guard decided to rework his technique altogether.

Waiters had noticed that his shots were drifting to the left, so he positioned his feet to the right of where he - and almost every player in the league - usually stands on the charity stripe.

"The first couple times it felt weird," he told NewsOK.com's Anthony Slater.

The 6-foot-4 gunner made seven of his first eight to start the preseason, but then missed three of four against the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday.

While his sub-70 percent performance from the line last season isn't entirely catastrophic, his quirky new shot does invoke memories of poor free-throw shooters of yesteryear.

If Waiters' shooting performance holds up, he may be able to stave off the drastic measures taken by former teammate Tristan Thompson.

Kevin Durant, who has nailed 88 percent of his free throws throughout his career, warned Waiters about overcompensating, though. "Kevin said you gonna get a damn violation (if) you step out any further."
