Victor Oladipo to 'Dunk Cancer,' donate Dunk Contest earnings

Reinhold Matay-USA TODAY Sports

The NBA Slam Dunk Contest isn't about the money, it's about the dunks, and young players building their fan base while putting on a good show.

The winners still get a handsome payday for one night's work, with the champion taking home $100,000, the runner-up earning $50,000 and the other two participants cashing a $20,000 check.

For Orlando Magic sophomore Victor Oladipo, this year's event will be about the money, but not for his own gain. Like Terrence Ross, Paul George and John Wall did last season when they won the competition in the now-retired and convoluted East vs. West format, Oladipo will donate whatever amount he wins to charity.

Three different charities will benefit from Oladipo winnings: Florida Hospital Cancer Institute, Children's National Medical Center and the Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Cancer Center.

Oladipo plays in Florida and is an Indiana alum, so the locations make perfect sense. He'll also be assisting the nonprofit entity Dunk Cancer by hosting a fundraising campaign over All-Star Weekend, encouraging fans to donate to the cause over 72 hours.

Oldaipo explained his decision to take action with this opportunity to NBA.com/Magic:

It’s an honor and privilege to be chosen for the Slam Dunk Contest and what better way to celebrate than share my good fortune with others through my partnership with Dunk Cancer. It was difficult to choose one charity to donate my earnings to and ask fans to help raise money for, so I chose three based on locations close to my heart - Maryland because that’s where I was born and grew up; Indiana because I’m a Hoosier for life; and Florida because they believed in me on draft night two years ago. I hope fans join me in such a worthy cause.
