Spurs announce signing of Aron Baynes on a reported 1-year, $2.1M deal
With training camp set to begin, the San Antonio Spurs have officially locked down the 14th returning member of their 2013-14 NBA championship team.
On Friday, the team announced that they have re-signed restricted free agent Aron Baynes, with ESPN's Marc Stein reporting that it's a one-year deal worth $2.1 million.
While Baynes may not have shown to be worth more than the minimum salary through two years with the team, the Spurs are in no trouble of hitting the luxury tax and are well-known for valuing continuity at the end of their bench. If reports that Baynes had interest from overseas are true, then the Spurs may have needed to go beyond the $915,243 minimum for Baynes' level of experience to bring him back.
The 6-foot-10 Baynes will slot back in as the team's third-string center, standing behind Tiago Splitter and Jeff Ayres (and occasionally Tim Duncan and Boris Diaw). Baynes has largely been relegated to mop-up duty through two seasons, appearing in 69 games and averaging just 9.2 minutes. In that time, he's averaged three points and 2.6 rebounds while shooting 44.7 percent from the field.
