J.R. Smith: 'I'm on pace to be one of the best shooters the game [has] ever seen'

We finally have an answer as to why New York Knicks guard J.R. Smith attempted 22 three pointers in a game last season. In his own words, he's "on pace to be one of the best shooters the game had ever seen."

Smith made his bold declaration on Instagram

To his credit, Smith is a pretty accurate three-point shooter. Among all players who attempted over 100 threes last season, Smith ranked 26th in three-point percentage at 39.4, which is made all the more impressive given that he took 6.5 per game. In comparison, Portland Trail Blazers guard Damian Lillard attempted 6.8 per contest and sunk 39.4 percent of his tries.

But all-time? That's another story. With great shooters like Ray Allen, Dirk Nowitzki and Reggie Miller having played the game, Smith's pedestrian career average of 37.1 per cent doesn't even come close.
