The Brooklyn Nets selected Oklahoma State guard Markel Brown with the No. 44 overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft on Thursday night.

Overshadowed some by Marcus Smart, Brown quietly had a very effective senior season, averaging 17.2 points on 47.3 percent shooting. That moved him into the second round, where he'll look to use his top-tier athleticism and 6-foot-9 wingspan to carve out a role as a high-energy reserve. If he can continue the 3-point improvements he showed as a junior and senior, he could work his way into a rotation.

The Nets must be extremely high on Brown, because they paid a significant chunk of money to acquire the pick from the Minnesota Timberwolves. He certainly has a scoring touch, and plays on the wing, so he looks to have a bright future ahead of him. However, with multiple veterans on the wings currently on the roster, Brown will likely see little playing time next season.
