Celtics head coach Brad Stevens has a storied history with Butler University's men's basketball program.

Stevens started his coaching career as a low-level coordinator of basketball operations under then head coach Thad Matta in 2000. Following Matta's exit in 2001, Stevens was promoted to full-time assistant head coach under new head coach Todd Lickliter, where he held a myriad of responsibilities including skills instruction, game preparation, in-game coaching and recruiting.

Lickliter departed Butler for Iowa University in 2007, opening the door for Stevens. Through five seasons with Stevens at the helm, the Bulldogs compiled a record of 166-49, and twice finished as the runners-up in the NCAA tournament. His accomplishments at Butler and noted work ethic earned him a job with the Boston Celtics, who hired him to serve as their head coach in 2013.

By virtue of his accolades and his history with the school, Stevens was invited to speak at Butler University's Spring Commencement.

Stevens' advice to Butler's spring graduation class was simple: the key to success is hard work.

"The magic is in the work. You've got to work. You've got to grind. It's gotta be, there's going to be tough times...You've got to figure out what's important, and just practice that deliberately every day."
