Pistons' Billups after knee surgery: 'The gas light is on'

by Steph Rogers

Detroit's Chauncey Billups isn't sure how much he's got left in the tank after undergoing left knee surgery this week.

“The gas light is on. I don’t know if there’s 15 miles or 30 miles left," the 37-year-old said via the Detroit Free Press.

Billups isn't going to rush back from the minor procedure to clean up a torn meniscus. He's been given a rehab timetable of 2-3 weeks before a possible return.

The Pistons came out strong, scoring 37 in the first quarter against the Warriors on Monday night. By the fourth, Golden State outscored the home team 23-13 and sent Detroit to a 104-96 loss.

Asked if retirement is a possibility with just one year left on his deal:

“It all kind of just depends how this feels, how things are with the knee. If the knee is fine, sure I would like to come back. But if it’s not, I don’t want to come back to this. It’s tough to do this and we’re not a winning team at this stage. It’s tough to do that, but hopefully in a perfect world and my knee is fine ... I feel like if my knee was fine we probably wouldn’t be in the position that we’re in.”
