Cuban thinks Mavericks are worth 'well over a billion' dollars
Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban isn't putting a lot of stock into Forbes magazine's recent list of the NBA's most valuble franchises.
The Mavericks were listed eighth with a price tag of $765 million, but if you're looking to acquire the team from Cuban - who bought it in 2000 for $285 million - you're going to have to offer a little more.
“Everything’s for sale, but it’s going to take 100 trillion dollars,” Cuban told the Dallas News.
Cuban, who traveled to Toronto to sit behind his teams' bench Wednesday for their game against the Raptors, is arguably one of professional sports most passionate owners. He argued that Forbes' assessment of the Mavs' worth is "way too low."
“I think we’re worth well over a billion. I think within the next five years, and this is just a guess, if the economy continues to get a little better and sports still stays in demand, every NBA franchise will be worth at least a billion dollars.”
Despite missing the playoffs last season, Dallas was one of only six NBA teams to sell out every regular season game. After going through a dismal spell of 10 straight years below .500 in the 90's, the Mavericks have had 13 years without a losing season since Cuban purchased the team. Luckily for Mavs fans, the team looks to be under the Cuban family control for years to come.
“I always tell my kids it’s their empire to [mess] up,” Cuban said.
