Ricky Rubio and the Cleveland Cavaliers are reportedly in talks to part ways, according to The Athletic's Shams Charania.

According to Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com, the two sides are not close to an agreement but a trade is the preferred outcome for both parties.

The 33-year-old has been away from the team to focus on his mental health and is not expected to return to the NBA this season. In a statement released through the Spanish Basketball Federation last August, Rubio said he "decided to stop (his) professional activity to take care of (his) mental health."

The Cavaliers are reportedly looking to free up a roster spot as they deal with a growing list of injured players.

Last week, the Cavs announced that Evan Mobley (knee surgery) and Darius Garland (broken jaw) would be out for an extended period. Cleveland has also been without guard Ty Jerome, who's suffering from an ankle injury, since October.

Rubio returned from ACL surgery in January and made 33 appearances for the team, averaging 5.2 points and 3.5 assists.

The veteran guard is making $6.1 million in 2022-23 and is guaranteed $4.25 million next season.
