Los Angeles Clippers forward Robert Covington will avoid free agency and re-sign on a two-year, $24-million extension, his agent told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.
The Clippers acquired Covington from the Portland Trail Blazers in February. He averaged 10.4 points on 45% shooting from beyond the arc in 23 games with L.A.
Because he bypassed the open market, Covington was only eligible to sign a maximum extension of two seasons with Los Angeles due to his recent trade. His contract pushes the team's luxury tax bill to $54.9 million, according to ESPN's Bobby Marks.
Known as a dependable 3-and-D wing throughout his nine seasons in the league, Covington will fit in as a low-usage option beside Paul George and Kawhi Leonard, who's still recovering from a torn ACL.
