The Detroit Pistons reached an agreement on a contract extension with head coach Dwane Casey that will keep him with the team through 2023-24, the team announced Wednesday.

Casey's previous deal was set to expire after the 2022-23 campaign.

Pistons general manager Troy Weaver, who is completing his first full season in his role, has been pleased with the development of several players on the roster, including Jerami Grant and rookies Saddiq Bey and Isaiah Stewart, Wojnarowski notes.

"Dwane's ability to adapt and lead us through a challenging but very exciting year of growth and development has further established his place as one of the most highly respected coaches in the NBA," Pistons owner Tom Gores said in a statement.

"He is fully committed to the restoration of the Pistons where his competitiveness, teaching ability, and developmental acumen can be seen in the growth of our young players. I eagerly anticipate watching the future of this team and the upward trajectory of the franchise under his continued leadership as we strive to compete for championships."

Casey first took charge in Detroit ahead of the 2018-19 season, penning a five-year contract with the franchise after he was let go by the Toronto Raptors following seven years together.

While he's yet to helm a winning season with the Pistons, Casey led Toronto to a combined 320-238 regular-season record, including a franchise-record 59-win campaign that also saw him earn the NBA Coach of the Year award in his last season with the club. However, the Raptors had already dismissed Casey by the time he won the honor after the Cleveland Cavaliers swept the team in the Eastern Conference semifinals.
