The Minnesota Timberwolves have signed undrafted sophomore guard Ashton Hagans out of Kentucky to a two-way deal, The Athletic's Shams Charania reports.

Hagans averaged 11.5 points and 3.9 rebounds in 33.1 minutes per game, plus team highs of 6.4 assists and 1.9 steals per contest. He shot just 25.8% on 2.1 3-point attempts per game but made 81% of his free throws, suggesting he could extend his shooting range to the NBA arc with time.

While Hagans' scoring touch has been inconsistent, he's made his mark on the other end, where he's twice been named to the SEC's All-Defensive team. Hagans also shared Defensive Player of the Year honors with LSU's Tremont Waters in 2018-19.

Bio

Position: PG
School: Kentucky
Height: 6-foot-3
Weight: 193 lbs
Wingspan: 6-foot-8
Max vertical: 36.5 inches

Strengths

  • Harasses unexpected opponents as a help defender; ranked third behind Rajon Rondo and John Wall in total steals by a Wildcats freshman
  • A team-oriented player on offense; a more-than-willing passer (sometimes to a fault)
  • Gets to the line well for a player who rarely looks for his own scoring opportunities

Weaknesses

  • Not having a workable jumper at this stage doesn't bode well
  • Can be careless with the ball; averaged 3.4 turnovers last season
  • Needs to improve as an on-ball defender in man-to-man
