Wade: Paul didn't come to Miami because I wouldn't give up No. 3

Prior to Chris Paul getting traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder last season, there was talk of the All-Star guard possibly landing in Miami.

One of the reasons that didn't happen is because Paul and fellow "Banana Boat" crew member Dwyane Wade couldn't reach an agreement over their jersey numbers.

"After we talked for a while, and then we decided that I wasn't gonna go to Miami and all that," Paul said during an Instagram Live chat with Wade on Friday. "C.J., I remember my brother was sitting over there on the couch. And C.J. was like, 'That ain't gonna work anyway, 'cause who gonna wear No. 3?' C.J. said, 'Who gonna wear No. 3?' And then you was on the phone, you know what's crazy? I sorta found out who you were then.

"Because when C.J. said that, the next thing that you was supposed to say was like, 'Oh no, that's cool, we make it work. I give up No. 3.' That's what you was supposed to say."

But as Wade explained, giving up No. 3 wasn't an option for him.

"No, that was, like, my team. I couldn't give up No. 3," he said. "It was going to be retired there one day. I knew I couldn't that.

"For all the people out there that's listening, CP didn't come to Miami because we couldn't come to an agreement on No. 3," Wade added.

The Heat retired Wade's No. 3 jersey at halftime of their Feb. 22 game against the Cleveland Cavaliers.
