The United States Patent & Trademark Office denied LeBron James' request to trademark the phrase "Taco Tuesday," according to files obtained by lawyer Josh Gerben.

The examining attorney determined the phrase couldn't be protected as a trademark because it's a "commonplace message."

The Los Angeles Lakers superstar filed his application at the end of August. He belts out the term weekly on Instagram videos. James submitted the application through his company, LBJ Trademarks LLC.

The proposed trademark aimed to include "advertising and marketing services provided by means of indirect methods of marketing, communications, namely, social media, search engine marketing, inquiry marketing, mobile marketing, blogging and other forms of passive, shareable or viral communications channels."

James, 34, has enjoyed a busy summer off the court, highlighted by his participation in the filming of Space Jam 2. He and the Lakers are slated to begin training camp Sept. 28.
