Warriors head coach Steve Kerr was relaxing on a beach in Hawaii when he learned that Kevin Durant was leaving Golden State to join the Brooklyn Nets.

As Kerr explained in an interview with ESPN's Jackie MacMullan, he was deep into a book when he overheard a man tell his friend that Durant was headed to the Brooklyn Nets. Kerr had purposefully left his cell phone in his hotel room, despite it being the start of free agency.

"Oh my god!" the man said in Kerr's retelling. "KD is going to the Nets!"

Coincidentally, it was the same beach where Kerr first learned that Durant was signing with the Warriors three years ago. But the coach doesn't expect people to feel sorry for him or the Warriors.

"Hawaii giveth," Kerr said, "and taketh away."
