Report: Mavericks plan to offer Porzingis $158M max deal
The Dallas Mavericks intend to offer restricted free-agent big man Kristaps Porzingis a maximum contract worth $158 million over five years when free agency begins June 30, sources told The Athletic's Shams Charania.
The 23-year-old was acquired via trade from the New York Knicks in late January but ultimately missed all of the 2018-19 season while recovering from a torn left ACL he sustained in February 2018.
Prior to his year-plus absence, Porzingis broke through as an All-Star during the 2017-18 campaign, averaging 22.7 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 2.4 blocks per game.
Porzingis, who's represented by his older brother Janis, reportedly planned to inform the Mavericks of his intent to sign a one-year qualifying offer this offseason, which would allow him to reach unrestricted free agency next summer. Now, between a potential extension worth over $150 million and the prospect of playing alongside reigning Rookie of the Year Luka Doncic, Porzingis' camp has several reasons to reconsider that position.
