Report: Lue assured Walton that Lakers haven't contacted him
Tyronn Lue won't be keeping any secrets from Los Angeles Lakers head coach Luke Walton if the organization just so happens to contact him.
The former head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers reached out to Walton to assure him the Lakers hadn't reached out about a potential opening, a source close to the situation told The Athletic's Bill Oram.
If Lue were contacted, he would reportedly inform Walton out of "courtesy and friendship."
Even with one guaranteed year remaining on his contract, Walton's future with the Lakers is very much in question with the team failing to qualify for the playoffs during LeBron James' first year in L.A. The Lakers entered Wednesday's matchup with the Utah Jazz owning a 33-41 record, which is two wins fewer than they had all of last season with eight games remaining on the schedule.
Lue is one of several names - along with Mark Jackson and Jason Kidd - considered to be in the mix for the job should Walton be fired. He previously coached James in Cleveland for four seasons and established a strong rapport with the four-time league MVP while capturing a championship together in 2016.
Walton and Lue met up for breakfast during the Las Vegas Summer League, with Lue offering advice on how to handle James and the immense media attention he garners.
