The Dallas Mavericks are looking to trademark Luka Doncic's nickname.
The Mavs submitted a trademark application to the United States Patent and Trademark Office for "The Matador" - the nickname player development coach Mike Procopio gave Doncic - on Dec. 28, according to Josh Gerben of Gerben Law Firm.
The Mavs have moved to protect Luka Doncic's nickname by filing trademarks on THE MATADOR and EL MATADOR.

The problem for Doncic is the MAVS are claiming ownership of the name.
If Doncic leaves the Mavs he will not own his nickname.
He needs a better trademark lawyer. pic.twitter.com/QXmOR22Lnn
Gerben notes that the application didn't include written consent from Doncic for the Mavs to register his nickname - something the USPTO will require.
