Report: Trade interest in Wizards' Wall 'close to nonexistent'

The Washington Wizards have reportedly made everyone on the roster available for trade, but interest in five-time All-Star John Wall is said to be "close to nonexistent," league sources tell ESPN's Bobby Marks.

"There is a 99 percent chance that we would not trade for Wall, but I need to be prepared for that 1 percent," an unnamed team executive told Marks.

Wall is owed $19.2 million this season, with his supermax extension kicking in next year. However, trading for Wall would trigger a 15 percent bonus on his remaining salary, increasing his annual payout beyond the maximum possible salary figure for both this season and next.

The legality of Wall's trade bonus only further complicates acquiring the 28-year-old and taking on his massive base salary. Before accounting for trade bonuses, Wall is owed $171 million from 2019 to 2023, which includes a $46.9-million player option for the 2022-23 season.

According to Marks, a survey of league executives drew a consensus response: In a hypothetical situation which Wall was a free agent this summer, teams would not sign him at the remaining figures of his supermax extension, and he is virtually untradeable given what he is still owed.

"I couldn't look my owner in the eye and tell him there is value with the player even if we didn't have to trade anything of significance," one executive told Marks.
