Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey had long coveted Carmelo Anthony prior to signing him on Monday.

As part of a recruitment pitch to bring the All-Star forward to the Lone Star State in 2014, Morey reached out to comic book artist Rob Liefeld - the man behind popular Marvel characters Deadpool, Cable, and the X-Force - to commission a piece of original artwork.

This Rockets-themed piece was designed to entice Anthony on the idea of forming a new Big 3 alongside James Harden, and Dwight Howard.

CARMELO, CABLE & Me! Back in 2014, while watching the @nba playoffs, I received a message from Houston Rockets GM @darylmorey, it had the blue check mark, I knew it was him but I couldn’t believe that he was asking me to draw art for a couple of free agents that were going to be on the market! “I love your X-Force and I love Cable!” He exclaimed, I was simultaneously stunned and thrilled. I did up this Carmelo Anthony as a Rocket art also featuring James Harden and Dwight Howard for their eventual dance with him and as of today, it is now a reality! Carmelo is a Rocket! Congrats Daryl! You got your man, it just took a few extra years. I’ve been fortunate to have DM take me to a number of Lakers/Rockets games and have been able to pick his brilliant mind. So, this was pretty special to have my passion for the NBA and Comics combined and I made a new friend along the way! You never know who read those comic books folks! Thanks again DM and good luck!! And yes, I’ve signed DM’s New Mutants #87 so that circle is complete! #cable #xforce #deadpool #marvel #houstonrockets #nba #carmeloanthony colors by @mentalstudios

The illustration didn't do much good at the time, as Anthony decided to re-sign with the New York Knicks on a new five-year contract.

Fast forward to present day, and the now 34-year-old Anthony joins Houston on a one-year deal worth just $2.4 million following a buyout with the Atlanta Hawks that teams him with both Harden and close friend Chris Paul.
