The NBA's "one-and-done" rule appears set to be abolished in the coming years, but it may take longer than initially expected.

An NBA memo sent to teams in June suggested the rule could change in time for the 2021 NBA Draft. However, according to ESPN's Jonathan Givony, league officials told teams they don't expect the change until 2022.

The one-and-done rule has been in effect since 2006, with Philadelphia 76ers veteran Amir Johnson being the last player drafted directly out of high school. The rule, which requires players to be at least 19 years old and a year removed from high school to enter the draft, was meant, in part, to keep the NBA's scouts and executives "out of high school gyms," according to the New York Times.

Several superstar athletes entered the league directly from high school prior to the rule change, such as LeBron James, Kevin Garnett, and Kobe Bryant.
