Mychal Thompson suggests Klay will hit free agency in 2019

Klay Thompson wants to remain with the Golden State Warriors, but don't expect him to be senselessly generous when it comes to his next contract.

A recent report from Marcus Thompson of The Athletic suggested the sharpshooting guard would give the Warriors a massive discount by signing an extension this summer instead of going to free agency in 2019, but his dad, Mychal, pumped the brakes on Tuesday.

"Klay definitely wants to play his whole career in Golden State and the Bay Area - there’s no question about that. He loves it up there … loves the fans," Mychal told 95.7 The Game, as transcribed by Drew Schiller of CSN Bay Area.

"But let’s just say that negotiations will probably continue in the summer of ’19."

The difference between signing an extension this summer versus waiting to re-up in 2019 is staggering. Thompson can extend his deal for $102 million over five years in a few weeks, or he can wait until the 2019 offseason when he could sign for the maximum $188 million as a free agent.

Golden State is facing a significant cap crunch with its star-laden roster, and financial constraints could eventually force the team to dismantle its dynasty. The Warriors' only two paths around this problem would be to pay an exorbitant luxury tax bill, or for the players to take pay cuts.

Kevin Durant set the standard last summer when he took $9 million below the maximum so the Warriors could re-sign Andre Iguodala and Shaun Livingston. Before that, it was Stephen Curry's bargain deal that allowed enough cap room to sign Durant in the first place. Thompson would likely be asked to make a similar sacrifice.
