Magic using Lil' Penny doll as draft lottery good luck charm

The Orlando Magic will be leaning on a talking Lil' Penny doll for good luck during the NBA draft lottery on Tuesday night.

Team co-founder Pat Williams told Josh Robbins of the Orlando Sentinel he plans to bring the toy, which appeared in a 1990s Nike advertising campaign centered around former Magic star Penny Hardaway, with him into the room where the pingpong balls are drawn.

"We put the finest minds we've got on this one and this is what they came up with," Williams joked.

"I'll keep that very, very, very close. We don't want anybody running off with that, so I'll have that in my possession the entire evening. It's our version of a lucky penny. We’ve tried everything in the past: lucky coins, four-leaf clovers, rabbits' feet, Lucky Charms cereal. We've taken everything up there."

The Magic have an 8.8 percent chance of landing the No. 1 pick after finishing the 2017-18 season with the fifth-worst record in the NBA.

Magic president of basketball operations Jeff Weltman will also bring a good luck charm with him to the draft lottery, but didn't reveal what it will be.

"I did take something along from my family," he said. "But I can't talk about it or it won't work."
