Boston Celtics point guard Kyrie Irving will undergo a minimally invasive procedure Saturday to alleviate irritation in his left knee, the team announced.

Irving has been day to day since exiting a March 11 loss to the Indiana Pacers with knee soreness. His decision to opt for surgery comes after consultations with multiple doctors.

The five-time All-Star had previously indicated he wasn't concerned about the lingering issue and was under the impression that some rest would take care of it. He's been bothered by it since fracturing his left kneecap during the 2015 NBA Finals.

Irving leads the No. 2 Celtics with 24.4 points and 5.1 assists over 60 games this season. A timetable for his return will be set following the procedure.

Boston is 2-2 since the Pacers game and visit the Portland Trail Blazers on Friday night.
