Dallas Mavericks point guard Dennis Smith Jr. accepted an invitation to participate in the 2018 Slam Dunk contest, Shams Charania of Yahoo reported Tuesday, citing league sources.

After the report, Smith tweeted that he hadn't yet been officially invited, although he would love to participate.

The hyperathletic 6-foot-4 rookie would be an obvious choice for the league's premier showcase on All-Star Saturday Night. He established his reputation as a vicious dunker during his exhilarating season at NC State.

Last year's Slam Dunk contest winner, Glenn Robinson III, will not be able to defend his throne after undergoing ankle surgery.
