Walton hoping meditation can help Lakers' foul line woes

The Los Angeles Lakers have one of the youngest teams in the NBA, and perhaps a byproduct of that is they are a poor free-throw shooting team. Historically bad, in fact. Coach Luke Walton is hoping team meditation sessions will help with that.

"Free throws are more mental than anything," Walton told reporters Saturday, saying he already set up one session for the team last month. "We're gonna keep doing it in hopes that some of the young guys can pick it up and get into it."

Following Friday's dreadful 2-for-14 performance from the line, the Lakers are shooting a league-worst 68.8 percent from the charity stripe.

Walton is a big believer in meditation as a form of relaxation; it's something favored by his father Bill, as well as his onetime head coach Phil Jackson.

"Your mind is like a muscle - it can be trained," Walton said. "It needs work, it needs quiet time, especially in today's world that we live in with social media and constant stimulation to your phone all day."
