Wayman Tisdale's 1984 Olympic gold medal to be auctioned off
One of the gold medals won by the U.S. men's basketball team at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles will soon be up for auction.
Former Oklahoma star Wayman Tisdale's 1984 gold medal and Team USA uniform will be sold through Goldin Auctions, with bidding opening on Jan. 22, according to E.Jay Zarett of Sporting News. Goldin Auctions estimates the medal could fetch between $100,000 and $150,000.
"It is very rare when an Olympic gold medal and jersey becomes available at auction, especially from such an historic team as the 1984 U.S. men's basketball team," said Ken Goldin, founder of Goldin Auctions.
Tisdale averaged 8.6 points and a team-leading 6.4 rebounds per game as a member of the Bobby Knight-coached Olympic squad. He was drafted No. 2 overall by the Indiana Pacers in 1985 and spent 12 seasons in the NBA before becoming a successful jazz musician.
Tisdale passed away on May 15, 2009, following a battle with cancer.
