Kawhi shut down indefinitely to rehab quad injury

San Antonio Spurs forward Kawhi Leonard is out indefinitely in order to rehab his right quadriceps tendinopathy, the team announced Wednesday.

"Kawhi has made significant progress and continues to move forward in his rehabilitation," Spurs general manager RC Buford said. "This is the best approach for the next steps in his return to play."

Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich said the superstar's recovery hasn't trended in the direction they'd hoped for, per Jeff McDonald of the San Antonio Express-News.

"It hasn't responded the way we wanted it to," Popovich said.

"He's given it a shot. He's frustrated as hell. He wants to play badly," he added. "But if we're going to err, we're going to do it on the side of health and being wise."

Leonard missed the first 27 games of the season as he recovered from the injury before making his season debut Dec. 12 against the Dallas Mavericks.

In a limited nine appearances this season, Leonard is averaging 16.2 points, 4.7 rebounds, and two steals.
