David Robinson likens Marvin Bagley III to young Tim Duncan

San Antonio Spurs legend David Robinson knows a generational big man when he sees one.

Robinson is an admirer of Duke freshman Marvin Bagley III, the leading candidate to be selected first overall in next summer's NBA draft. The Admiral even sees some similarities between Bagley and an all-time great.

"He reminds me a little bit of Tim Duncan in being so mature with the ball," Robinson told Jeff Goodman of ESPN. "He's got the same composure as a young Tim.

"I saw Tim in college at Wake (Forest), and he was phenomenal in terms of being patient. He never got rattled, and that's Bagley. He's the same way. Fantastic kid."

Bagley has only made eight appearances, but it's already clear what he's capable of. The 6-foot-11 forward is averaging 22.3 points and 11.3 rebounds while shooting 59 percent from the field and playing lockdown defense on the perimeter and in the paint. Duke is also a perfect 8-0 to start.

However, regardless of his talents, he'll have a long way to go if he is to meet Robinson's lofty comparison. After all, not only is Duncan a top-10 player in NBA history, he was also named Naismith Player of the Year, in addition to earning a boatload of other conference honors.

For now, at least, Robinson sees a promising start for Bagley.

"For such a young guy, he's very composed and patient in the post. He makes very wise decisions, which you just don't see at this age. 18- or 19-year-old kids rush things. He gets the ball down low, takes his time. He's got great moves and great touch. He plays really hard. He's exceptional at that age, that's for sure."
