The Brooklyn Nets announced point guard D'Angelo Russell underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee Friday. The team offered no timetable for his return.

Russell missed a handful of games with the Lakers last season with a mild MCL sprain, though that particular injury was in his right knee.

This is the second significant health issue to impact the Nets' backcourt this season. Veteran combo guard Jeremy Lin - projected to start alongside Russell this season - was shut down for the year after rupturing his patellar tendon in Brooklyn's season opener.

In his first season in Brooklyn, Russell has played a pivotal role, particularly in the wake of Lin's injury. Through 12 appearances, Russell averaged 20.9 points, 5.7 assists, 4.7 rebounds, and a steal per game.

Fourth-year point guard Spencer Dinwiddie should be in line for an increased role for as long as Russell remains shelved. Dinwiddie started in Russell's absence Tuesday night, logging a season-high 34:18 of playing time, finishing with a 12-point, 11-assist double-double.
