Jeremy Lin done for season after rupturing patellar tendon

Jeremy Lin was right.

The Brooklyn Nets guard is expected to miss the remainder of 2017-18 after suffering a patellar tendon rupture, the team announced Thursday.

Lin, 29, sustained the non-contact injury on a drive to the rim during the fourth quarter of Wednesday's season opener against the Indiana Pacers. He immediately checked on his right knee, mouthed the words "I'm done," and broke down in tears.

The combo guard finished with 18 points and four assists in 25 minutes in the 140-131 loss.

Lin signed with Brooklyn as a free agent in 2016, but missed the majority of last season with various injuries, primarily to his left hamstring. He put up 14.5 points, 5.1 assists, and 3.8 rebounds over 36 games in 2016-17. He's owed $12 million this year and has a player option worth $12.5 million for 2018-19.

Nets general manager Sean Marks released the following statement:

Jeremy worked tremendously hard during the offseason and in training camp and was excited for the prospects of the team this season. We feel awful that the injury will cost him the season, however our entire organization will be there to support Jeremy in every way possible throughout his recovery. Jeremy remains an important part of this team and will continue to contribute in a leadership role.

The Nets may turn to reserves Isaiah Whitehead and Spencer Dinwiddie with Lin out, as well as starting shooting guard D'Angelo Russell, whom they acquired in the offseason and mostly ran the point in his two seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers.
