Durant: 'Cupcake' taunts showed Thunder fans' creativity, passion

With the launch of his latest, cupcake-inspired signature sneaker, Warriors superstar Kevin Durant is trying to keep everything in perspective. After all, basketball should be fun.

With that in mind, Durant said he appreciated the passion that his (former) fans in Oklahoma City showed when he visited last season - especially those who vigorously taunted the ex-Thunder forward with cupcake-themed digs, a reference to a post made by reigning MVP Russell Westbrook in the wake of Durant's departure.

An admitted cupcake aficionado, Durant didn't seem to mind the suggestion that he and the fluffy, icing-topped dessert share some intrinsic connection.

“My favorite memory of red velvet was being called a cupcake in Oklahoma City every time I touched the ball," Durant said in a video for Tasty. "That was fun."

“It definitely showed that the fans get really creative and are really invested in their team and the sport of basketball, so I looked at it as a positive."

So, there doesn't appear to be any hard feelings from Durant, especially since the jokes have inspired a red, white, and black colorway for his KDX shoes.

“It feels good to kind of conquer that whole cupcake thing," he added. "I know it was a big thing, so to kind of embrace that and make it a part of me now is what makes this whole thing now really, really cool."

If Durant's detractors can't come around to appreciate his ascendance to NBA champion, let them eat cake.
