The San Antonio Spurs must have something up their sleeves.

San Antonio renounced rights to forward Jonathon Simmons, who now becomes an unrestricted free agent, sources told Shams Charania of The Vertical.

Simmons was a breakout star in the Spurs' postseason run that ended in the Western Conference finals, especially during Kawhi Leonard's absence. He averaged 14 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 2.4 assists in the final two rounds of the playoffs.

The 28-year-old's best performance came in Game 6 of the semifinals. He played shutdown defense against James Harden in the Spurs' 39-point elimination of the Houston Rockets, while also scoring 18 points on 8-of-12 shooting.

It was widely assumed San Antonio would retain Simmons, especially since the team held his restricted rights. However, the addition of Rudy Gay through free agency might have made Simmons a redundancy in the eyes of the Spurs.
