Report: Chris Paul meets with Clippers to discuss future

With unrestricted free agency less than a week away, Chris Paul met with Los Angeles Clippers management on Tuesday to discuss his future (or lack thereof) with the franchise, sources told The Vertical's Adrian Wojnarowski.

The two sides reportedly have more to discuss, and are expected to meet again soon.

With Kevin Durant and Steph Curry both near-locks to re-sign with the Golden State Warriors, Paul figures to be the most sought-after free agent to actually test the market this summer. He'll reportedly take meetings with the Houston Rockets and Denver Nuggets, and is reportedly giving serious consideration to the San Antonio Spurs, widely considered his most likely landing spot should he choose to leave Los Angeles.

The Clippers can still offer him a fifth year that no other team can, as well as higher annual raises. All told, they can give him some $50 million more in guaranteed money than he can get by signing elsewhere.

And given that Paul, as president of the players' union, helped campaign for super-max extensions and a higher age cap beyond which players can't benefit from four- or five-year deals (from 36 to 38 years old) in the new collective bargaining agreement, it stands to reason that the 32-year-old would be inclined to reap those rewards. He won't be able to do so with any team but the Clippers.

To that end, the fact that the two sides are meeting multiple times before the All-NBA point guard officially becomes a free agent can only be good news for the Clippers. He'll almost certainly still meet with other teams, but the clearer Paul is on how the Clippers plan to proceed - both with him and the team as a whole - before the negotiation period begins on July 1, the better.
