Timberwolves waive Nikola Pekovic

The Minnesota Timberwolves waived veteran center Nikola Pekovic, the team announced in a release on Tuesday.

Poor health has dogged Pekovic throughout his career. He missed all of last season with an ankle injury, and played just 43 combined games from 2014-16 while battling ankle and Achilles issues.

At the height of his abilities, the towering center from Montenegro averaged 16.9 points and 8.7 rebounds per game from 2012-14, serving as an interior-oriented compliment to Kevin Love during the All-Star's final two seasons in Minnesota.

There have been been stretches when Pekovic looked utterly dominant, but with the team building around younger big men like Karl-Anthony Towns and Gorgui Dieng, there just wasn't much room for the 31-year-old veteran - even if his health did hold up.

Overall, Pekovic played 271 games for the Timberwolves from 2010-16, averaging 12.6 points and 6.7 rebounds per game.
