The Boston Celtics plan to retire Paul Pierce's No. 34, team co-owner Wyc Grousbeck confirmed on The Sports Hub 98.5's "Toucher and Rich" show Monday.

Pierce took the floor for the final time on Sunday, collecting six points, three rebounds, an assist, and a steal in the Los Angeles Clippers' 104-91 defeat to the Utah Jazz.

The 39-year-old goes down as one of the greatest players in Celtics history, earning 10 All-Star selections, four All-NBA nods, one title, and one Finals MVP during his 15 seasons in Boston.

Pierce said at the beginning of the season that he plans to sign a one-day contract with the Celtics before officially calling it quits.

Grousbeck added that Pierce could re-join the organization at some point in the future, but has yet to determine a role for the Celtics great.

"There have been conversations in general by people close to him," Grousbeck said. "But we haven’t been allowed to talk directly to Paul while he's been playing. He's made it clear he’ll always feel like a Celtic and this is his basketball home. I think he wants to come back. We’re a little busy right now, thank goodness, and we’ll speak to him when the time is right.

"I’d like to get Danny [Ainge] and Brad [Stevens’] input on it this offseason, and see what Paul would like to do," he added. "But he’s a finals MVP, and the last player to wear No. 34 for us."

The future Hall of Famer ends his career as the Celtics' all-time leader in free throws, three-pointers, and steals.
