76ers' Robert Covington: Getting look as starting shooting guard in camp
Covington practiced with the Sixers' first unit as the starting shooting guard during Wednesday's session, Jake Fischer of Sports Illustrated reports.
Analysis:
Coach Brett Brown has yet to formally announce his plans for the Sixers' opening night lineup, but at this time, it appears his preferred options for the starting five include Jerryd Bayless, Covington, Dario Saric, Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid. While Covington saw most of his action at small forward last season, the Sixers are hoping Saric will be able to handle that position after serving as a power forward throughout most of his time in Turkey. The shift to shooting guard shouldn't hurt Covington too much, as his reputation as a volume three-point shooter makes him an adequate fit at the position. What's more worrisome for Covington is the likelihood that his shot attempts and playing time will decline in 2016-17, as the offseason additions of Saric, Simmons and Gerald Henderson in addition to holdover Hollis Thompson give the Sixers more options on the wing than they've had in either of his previous two seasons with the club.
