IRWIN Tools Night Race: Lap 161 - Hamlin out of race after Harvick wreck
The yellow flag came out at Lap 161 after a multi-car wreck involving some drivers heavily involved in the Chase.
Kevin Harvick, who was running in 2nd, got into the rear of then race leader, Denny Hamlin, sending him spinning down the inner frontstretch wall. Dale Earnhardt Jr., who had nowhere to go, slammed right into Hamlin, exploding the No. 88 car’s left side door.
“The nose took off on me,” Harvick explained on the radio.
Here's a GIF of the incident:
Hamlin’s car received the most damage, and is done for the night. Dale Jr. exited his car, complaining about the temperatures in there, and walked to his hauler. Repair continues on the No. 88 car, but it’s not for certain whether he’ll be back in the race.
Hamlin was not impressed with Harvick, throwing his HANS device at the No. 4 car under caution.
Hamlin said that he didn’t think Harvick meant to hit his car, but he misjudged the incident. “I’m upset at the lost opportunity. We’ve had a fast car all weekend,” Hamlin said.
Harvick will restart 1st.
